Barry County Courthouse employee's new contract "a step in the right direction"

Barry County and the Barry County Courthouse Employees Association have agreed on an extension of its labor agreement after several months of negotiating (see related story).

Julie Ingle, president of the BCCEA said she is pleased that a new three-year agreement was reached with Barry County.

“After several months of negotiations and mediation, as well as countless hours of committee work on the 2015 Wage and Compensation Study by Segal-Waters, we are confident that this is a step in the right direction to pay current employees fair and competitive wages in the upcoming years,” she said. “The Association would like to thank all of the judges and the department heads that were instrumental in supporting our efforts throughout the last few months.”

Barry County Court’s Chief Judge William Doherty added his thoughts, saying the new contract between the county and employees is a step forward. The first  compensation and classification study done since 1998, which the negotiators followed, was not completely implemented, but the contract is a good start, he said. “I am very supportive of this contract;  it’s in the best interests of the everyone.”

Doherty noted county employees are handling a huge increase in the complexity of their jobs with increasing state and federal requirements in already stressful jobs. The county is having trouble keeping experienced employees, he said. “This will make a huge difference in keeping capable employees.”
