Police identify girl swept off pier, recovery efforts underway

A girl who was swept off the pier at Holland State Park around 11:30pm Wednesday night has been identified as 16- year-old Eliza Jane Trainer of Flint.  She is presumed to have drowned, but severe lake conditions have so far hampered efforts to locate and recover her body. Police are waiting for safer conditions to get search equipment and divers into the water. In the meantime a helicopter is searching by air, and crews are searching the shoreline.

An 18-year-old male friend of Trainer’s was also knocked into Lake Michigan by the waves, but he was able to make it out of the water and call for help.  Police say he was treated at a local hospital, his name was not released.
