State Police Investigate Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Michigan State Police (MSP) Wayland Post troopers are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Sunday June 26 around 1:00 p.m. on S. Yankee Springs Rd near Gun Lake Rd in Yankee Springs Township, Barry County.

Preliminary investigation reveals a trike style motorcycle was traveling southbound on S. Yankee Springs Rd near Gun Lake Rd. A northbound Chrysler Aspen SUV failed to yield the right-away, before making a left turn into a parking lot, and turned in front of the motorcycle resulting in the collision.

Both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown from the trike. The male driver, 59-year-old John Meyer of Caledonia, succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. The passenger, 69-year-old female and wife of the driver, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in intensive care.

The driver of the Chrysler SUV, described as a 26-year-old Delton man, had no obvious injuries but was checked by medical personnel as a precaution.
Helmets were worn by both occupants of the motorcycle. It is unknown if the driver of the SUV was wearing a seatbelt and if alcohol/drugs were a factor in this crash. Yankee Springs Rd was closed for several hours for crash investigation and clean up.

MSP was assisted at the scene by Michigan DNR, Barry County Sheriff’s Office, Yankee Springs Township Fire Department and Wayland Area EMS.
This crash incident remains open pending further investigation.
