Barry County Commission on Aging Launches Final $250,000 Community Challenge for New Activity & Resource Center

The Barry County Commission on Aging (BCCOA) is calling on the community to help complete a transformative project for local seniors through its Final $250,000 Community Challenge, the last step in funding a new 16,500-square-foot Activity & Resource Center set to open in Summer 2026.

For decades, BCCOA has supported older adults across Barry County by promoting independence, dignity, and quality of life through essential services such as Meals on Wheels, in-home care, caregiver support, wellness programming, and social engagement. Each year, thousands of seniors rely on these services to remain safely and actively connected to their community.

The new Activity & Resource Center, located at 2625 E M-79 Hwy in Hastings, will serve as a centralized hub for senior services and expand the organization’s ability to meet growing community needs. Key features of the new facility include:

  • Expanded Adult Day Services for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia
  • Increased health, wellness, and educational programming
  • Enhanced capacity for local meal production to support nutrition services
  • Welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces for recreation, connection, and community engagement

“This new center represents more than just a building—it reflects our community’s commitment to ensuring every older adult in Barry County feels supported, connected, and cared for,” said Courtney Ziny, Executive Director of BCCOA.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, BCCOA has already raised the majority of the funding needed for the project. The Final $250,000 Community Challenge is the last push to bring the vision fully to life.

The impact of BCCOA’s services is already evident across the county. In the past year alone, the organization provided over 67,000 meals, delivered more than 9,000 hours of Adult Day Services, and supported over 9,000 hours of in-home care—demonstrating both the demand for and value of these programs.

“This is a moment for our entire community to come together,” Ziny added. “Together, we can open the doors to a space that will serve Barry County seniors for generations to come.”
