Vonda was born in Hastings, MI, on July 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Marquerite (James) and Wesley Webb. Vonda attended local schools in the Hastings area, graduating from Hastings High School in 1948. After completing her education Vonda began working at EW Bliss Co. where she served faithfully for 5 years before joining the McKeown Insurance Agency. On May 26, 1951, Vonda was married to Mr. Marshall “Dutch” Cappon and the couple began their lives together in the Hastings area where they raised their family.Vonda was not only a terrific mother and homemaker, she was also instrumental in the family’s service station business. In 1962, Dutch & Vonda purchased EB Calkin Oil Company. During the following years Dutch & Vonda purchased several local stations, most of which had been permanently closed. Recognizing the demand for “self-serve” stations, Dutch and his family renovated the closed stations, then re-opened them under the family banner of Cappon Oil. Vonda was an integral part of the business success as she managed the day-to-day finances for the company. As their business grew, it was very common for Cappon Oil to be recognized for its outstanding sales performance, which afforded Dutch & Vonda the opportunity to travel the world.
Vonda’s faith was always at the center of her life, and she had the heart of true servant of Christ. Vonda has always been very active in her church, serving as an 8th grade Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir, and taking time to engage with various congregational activities. Vonda had a passion of the word of God and has read her entire bible over 52 times. When she and Dutch retired, they began a journey of worldwide church building ministry. Throughout the years, they have assisted in constructing churches in Jamaica, Japan, Honduras, Alaska and other various places. Vonda served faithfully, preparing meals for the workers, teaching bible studies, and passing out gospel tracts to the local residents.
In her younger years, Vonda & her family enjoyed spending time at the cabin on Perch Lake. During the summer months, she enjoyed tending to her garden, carefully harvesting the vegetables for canning in the fall. Vonda also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper, reading the Readers Digest, tabletop puzzles, and keeping a diary of daily events.
Vonda is survived by her beloved husband “Dutch” her children Daryl (Donna) Cappon, Terry (Dawn) Cappon, Marty (Carolyn) Cappon, 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Darla Sue Cappon in 2016, her sisters Margaret & Phyllis and an infant brother.
