Fatal Crash near Hastings

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash, involving a single vehicle, which occurred Saturday afternoon on East M 79 Hwy near Quimby Rd in Hastings Twp. 

 

The preliminary investigation revealed an east bound 2019 Ford F-150 pickup drove left of center and ran off the left (north) side of the roadway, colliding with tree(s). The sole occupant and driver of the 2019 Ford F-150, a 25 year old male from Vermontville, MI was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

 

The crash remains under investigation and no additional information and/or details are known or can be released at this time. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol and drugs are factors in this crash. 

 

 

Assisting at the scene of the crash were Barry County Central Dispatch, Nashville Police Department, Hastings Fire Department, Nashville Fire Department, Mercy EMS, Goldsworthy’s Towing and Western Medicine Office of the Medical Examiner. 

Friday, February 24 Delays & Cancellations

Hastings Southeastern Elementary closed on Friday due to a power outage at that location.  The rest of the Hastings School District is open Friday with busses running on main roads only.

Winter Weather Update

Mother Nature showed her ugly side Wednesday with heavy amounts of ice pellets and freezing rain. The Hastings National Weather Service Climatological station reports anywhere from a half to three quarters of an inch of ice on the ground. Ice on trees and tree limbs is measuring  from 0.2 to 0.3 tenths of ice.

Consumers energy is reporting 2,895 Barry County Customers out of electric service at this time.

Truck crash in Orangeville Township

 

Motorist Thursday morning were advised to take a different route after a propane truck went out of control and crashed in Barry County's Orangeville township. Michigan State Police Troopers said the crash occured  on Hayward road spilling a small amount of  propane and diesel.

Department of Natural Resources

The DNR has recommended 21 projects totaling $14,178,900 for the first round of Spark Grants funding.

The Village of Vermontville in Eaton County is to receive a grant of $362,300 for a Village Park Revitalization Project.

The Michigan Spark Grants program is aimed at helping improve and redevelop existing public recreation facilities and spaces in communities.

Car wash to replace Hastings State Street Diner

The Hastings Planning Commission on Monday night approved the special use permit and site plan for the purchase of the State Street Diner at 1105 West State Street for redevelopment into a car wash.

 

A new WhiteWater Car Wash will be built at that location. A number of State Street Diner employees attended the public hearing on the issue at Monday's Planning Commission meeting.

 

Lee Campbell, owner of State Street Diner, told WBCH News it will be most likely May or June before the change is made.

 

 

Maple Valley Schools closed on Tuesday, February 7

Maple Valley Schools will be closed on Tuesday, February 7 due to a gas leak at Maplewood Elementary. 

Consumers Energy shut down the gas line to the building on Monday and issued a notice that the building must remain closed until repairs are completed. The nature of the leak requires work that will keep Maplewood closed through Tuesday.

As a result, the district announced there will be no school for all students.

Fatal Crash in Baltimore Township

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash, involving two vehicles, which occurred on M-37 Highway near Butler Road in Baltimore Township around 7:20pm Tuesday.

 

The preliminary investigation  shows a northbound Volkswagen Jetta crossed the center line and collided with a southbound Buick Enclave. The two occupants of the Enclave were transported to Spectrum Health Pennock Hospital for their injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta, a 59 year old female from Hastings, was killed. 

 

The crash remains under investigation and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
